2015: Timmerhuis

OMA (Reinier de Graaf)  Behind the Townhall on the location of the former building of the City Department of Housing dating back to the 1970s Reinier de Graaf's multifunctional design has found its place. De Graaf is a partner in the Office of Metropolitan Architecture, the studio started by Rem Koolhaas.  The new building is constructed on the basis of innovative steel construction with a grid of 7.2 by 7.2 metres, called pixels in OMA's terminology.  The constructions rests on two massive steel legs. This is the reason why the space can be kept almost column free. The transparent ground floor facade makes the pixel structure appear as a cloud floating above the surface.  It connects seamlessly with the L-shaped office building of 1953 by city architect  Koops that runs along  Meent and Haagse Veer streets. The floors in the new building connect on level with continue into the existing building. Het Timmerhuis is a multifunctional building with shops, restaurants at ground level. It also houses the Museum Rotterdam, the historic city museum. Het museum takes up a little over 1700m². The front facing the Rode Zand Street is made of wave like composite. The entrance can be closed by a large metal sliding door. Above ground level the more closed off part of the building starts with four floors of office space. Aboven that we find 84 apartments. De core of the building is an atrium. The building is 60 meters high with 14 floors int the northern tower and 11 floors in the southern one.   De offices offer workspaces for up to 1,850 civil servants. The  apartements measure 2, 3 of 4 squares or pixels of 16x16 meters. The largest apartements are in the northern tower and have 360° views. As the towers is built up stepwise there is room for roof gardens the size of 1 square. The underground parking has room for 120 cars.
