Architecture in Rotterdam






           

Without much exageration Rotterdam could be called the city of architecture in the Netherlands. The cityscape is dominated by eye catching modern architecture. The  Netherlands Architecture Institute is based in Rotterdam and since 2003 the International Architecture Bienale is being held here. Rotterdam is also home to a large number of architects and urban planners. 

This website focuses in a number of ways on architecture and urban planing as it is practised and seen in Rotterdam. The site starts with an historic   introduction about modern architecture in Rotterdam, followed by an overview of the various styles through the decades. All of this illustrated with Rotterdam based examples. Also architects who have played a major role in the development of the city get a brief description. 

The chapter 100 years of architecture tries to of a kaleidoscopic overview of architecture in Rotterdam during the past 100 years. In due course an architectural guide will grow over the period from 1905 till present with highlighted examples for each year. Besides the highlighted work also other major buildings are listed by their year of completion. Right now you can find a pick from this overview, going back   5, 10, 20, 50 and 100 years respectively.
