100 years of architecture in Rotterdam

1995: Fortis Bank Blaak 555

This office building was built on the site of a former department store. It had survived the war, but not the post war need for progress. The new building is design by the German/American architect Fortis Bank 1995Helmut Jahn of Murphy/Jahn Architects. The American looking office building reacts to the 17 century Schielandhuis across the street by means of cut in the facade allowing a view from main thoroughfare Blaak. The building has four different facades. The one towards Blaak is rounded. The crown of the building has a grid structure like most of the western facade. The building is 30 stories high and reaches 104 metres.

Other known work by Jahn are the Sony Center in Berlin (1999), Head Office for German Mail in Bonn (2002), Kempinski Airport Hotel Munich (1994) and the Fair Ground Tower in Frankfurt.
